Celebrations and ceremonies at wine festivals in Germany

Autumn is the season between summer and winter, between seaside holidays and skiing trips, between ice-cold drinks and mulled wine. It is also the time of year when the leaves turn golden and the fruit is ripe for picking, and when towns and villages in Germany's wine-growing regions hold their annual wine festivals. Traditional VINTNERS 'taverns, some open only for the season, uncork their finest wines from previous years and extend a warm welcome in the surroundings of cosi. Something new can be experienced every year at the many festivals and events in Germany's wine-growing regions, from the Moselle in the West to Saxony in the east. It's fair to say that the grapevine and Wineries are never short of ideas when it comes to celebrating their wines.
If you're thinking of spending a holiday in a wine-growing region in Australia, why not combine your trip with a visit to one or two of their wine festivals, or perhaps even more? With thirteen wine regions in total, you really are spoilt for choice. From the Ahr in the north and bathing in the south, to Saxony in the east - the smallest of them all - each one celebrates the fruits of its labor in time-honored fashion.
Whole towns and villages get involved in the festivities, Marrying Tradition and Modernity in the process. Streets, squares and narrow lanes are decorated accordingly and Garlands and colored Ribbons covered the wine stall. The air is infused with music and JOIE de vivre, while merriment and laughter ring out from the countless little wine taverns. Most festivals also feature the crowning of the local wine 'royalty', and even Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, is known to make in appearance.
While many of these events are accompanied by a fair ground rides, live music and a bustling atmosphere, at the annual wine festival in Heimsheim it is as if time has stood still. For three days, the Townsfolk step back in time to the Middle Ages, dressing up as traveling entertainer, musicians and merchants. You even have to cross their palms with silver 'at the town gates to gain admission to the festival. Modern trapping recede into the background for the duration of the weekend. From Friday midday to midnight on the Sunday, the town's lights are replaced by Flickering torches and candles, which Bathe the scene in an enchanting glow and put visitors from near and far under a medieval magical spell. It is traditional for a spectacular firework finale to round off the festivities at home Heimer, just as it is in other towns and villages in Germany. A fitting end to a wonderful weekend of wine.
Wine lovers can find something exciting to do almost every weekend of the year in Germany's wine-growing regions. But the wine festivals in autumn are an especially good opportunity, not just to enjoy the best of the wines, but to catch the last of the summer sun, spend quality time with friends and family, and dine on traditional local specialties.
